New Start September
September has always felt like a new start, I presume this goes back to our school days. Why not this September start something new too? Low alcohol or alcohol-free drinks…?
Alcohol consumption is on a yearly downward trend, it’s true we are drinking less than our counterparts 20/30 years ago. The non-alcoholic drinking market is growing fast around the globe and in the UK. It was only a couple of years ago that the taste of non-alcoholic drinks tasted pretty bad, it was very unappealing. However, recent developments have not only improved the taste but increased the range available.
There are a lot of benefits from reducing the amount of alcohol you drink or not drinking at all. Below are few:
No hangover
Clear mind & clarity of thought
Improved health:
Liver & kidney function
Less strain on your heart
Skin
Increased energy levels
Reduced calories, better control of your body composition
Not just the calories of the alcohol but the additional eaten calories too
There are smart ways you can reduce your alcohol. Start by measuring your drinks instead of eyeballing, investing in a jigger (the technical term), will allow you to measure each drink accurately they can start from £1 on Amazon. If you drink wine it is useful to know the size of your glass, wine glasses on average are getting bigger and in turn we tend to pour more into each glass. Knowing the size of your glass, and filling our glass less, can improve the taste profile of wine allowing the aromas breath.
Another option is to invest in a wine preservation system. There is a distinct problem with the 750ml bottle when you only want one glass. Once you open the bottle the oxygenation process has started to take place, it’s a ticking clock before it is no longer drinkable, and quite possibly tasting like vinegar. This can mean you often drink more than you want because let’s be honest we’re not throwing it away. A Coravin will allow you to puncture the cork with a thin needle, which the wine comes out and is replaced by argon gas, preventing the wine from being oxidised. Now, why not get a more expensive bottle and drink a smaller glasses. Win!
Finally swamping alcoholic drinks for non or low alcoholic alternatives. Drinking Diet Coke or sparkling water was the go to but times have changed. There are now alcohol free versions of the drink we actually like that taste good.
Here are a few smart choices for you
You can make the drinks exciting: A clean gin recipe
50ml clean gin
150ml light tonic
Ice
A squeeze of lemon
A few basil leaves
2 raspberries
Mix all together in a high ball glass and garnish with a squeeze of lemon, basil leaves and the raspberries.
It doesn’t require you to stop, why not one night a week swamp your alcoholic drink for a non or low-alcoholic alternative. You’ll feel all the better the next day for it.
